Prepping Includes Learning About Propane Prices, Propane Tank Prices

By Cath Buhr

Many people are concerned about preparing for upcoming emergencies. In some cases, you are prepping for a societal collapse, while others are worried about natural disasters and still others simply value the notion of being prepared for any eventuality. For these individuals, learning about off-grid fuel is important and this includes researching propane prices as well as propane tank prices.

Propane is an ideal option for preppers as well as those who are seeking a more off-the-grid lifestyle. Unlike electricity and natural gas, you can stockpile your propane, which is a huge advantage. You can, of course, use batteries to store up energy harnessed from solar panels and wind turbines, and you might consider doing all three to ensure that you always have plenty of energy.

You might be worried about the cost of propane tanks for sale, and they do range in cost based on size and condition. New tanks obviously cost several hundred dollars more than a refurbished tank, so looking at used propane tank prices can be a smart idea. If you wish to stockpile, you probably won't be as interested in a 100-gallon propane tank as you would be in 500-gallon propane tanks or even 1,000-gallon tanks. If you have room on your property for multiple tanks, this also can be a good option. Also, ask your propane company if they are able to bury your propane tank, which is sometimes an option.

Storing large amounts of propane is not only a smart move for preppers but also anyone who lives in a rural location that's not particularly easy to access. If this describes your situation, it might be wisest to look at the larger tanks, as these won't need to be filled as often. The last thing you want is to run low on propane during the dead of winter when roads are impassable or there are propane shortages. Shortages can occur when the demand is high, so if you have a large tank or more than one tank, you will always have plenty of fuel on hand.

You probably have noticed that fuel costs, in general, tend to be higher in the winter months, and this is a truth you'll discover about propane prices, as well. The best time to buy your propane is when the propane prices and the demand are low. This often occurs during July and August and can be an optimum time to buy. After all, if you can buy when propane prices drop, you can afford to buy more propane, which helps you build up your supply.

When you begin looking around for propane tanks for sale and for a propane delivery service, be sure to select a propane company that sells only HD-5 propane. This is the most pure form of propane that you can purchase, and it burns more efficiently than HD-10 propane, which is often sold be propane companies. Be sure to also sign up for emails with your propane service so that you are aware of any drops in propane prices or special deals such discounts on propane tank prices.
