The stones may be irregular shaped, regularly, rough edged or smooth among many other looks that can available.

Old, less colorful and unfinished art or paintings have much of effect in turning a fireplace look old rustic.

The look and feel to a place is largely influenced by the color. Painting technique and colors too are important in determining a feel of room or a place too. Dark and quite rough finishing on a fireplace mantle would make the feel austere. Therefore, depending on the type of finish one would desire, the painting job should be done right and precise to come up with the look.

Simple but elegant sculptures and ornaments that are little old and unfinished would do a better job in transforming a modern fireplace mantel to a rustic old looking one. Such include wood carvings, metal sculptures and ornaments like shells or other collectibles give a natural rustic feel to the fire place mantel.

Theme settings too can have a place greatly transformed. When one decorates a mantle with farm pictures, tools or animals, it makes them look rustic. This could include carvings on the stone or wood that has specific meanings, like wild animals. Such paints or shape of the mantel would greatly influence look and feel. Wild life themes tend to be more natural to eyes.

Therefore, since the rustic hearth mantels are sensitive and more characterized, it is important to be very precise while decorating. Overdoing the decoration makes the mantle look cluttered and messy. One should pay close attention to the looks while decorating. But since decoration is all about personal choices and preferences, there is also room left for innovation and creativeness.
