Texas Small Houses Prove Bigger Isn't Always Better

By Jeffrey Taylor

Home ownership is still a big part of the American dream for a lot of people. Many see it as a visible sign of their success. It gives others a sense of security. It can also be a status symbol where the goal is to become the owner of the biggest and best home in the neighborhood. There is another trend however that is catching on all over the United States. Many individuals are following their southern neighbors who are choosing Texas small houses over larger and more elaborate ones.

One of the most obvious reasons to consider a tiny home is the cost of buying it. Purchasing a compact residence can be a great alternative to renting an apartment. You will probably still have more room than in a rental, and you will have the security of knowing your monthly payments will not be going up from year to year.

Tiny homes can be good investments for retirees looking to downsize. There may come a time when going up and down stairs every day becomes problematic. Seniors who plan to travel, but want a home base, may find a little residence the best option. Even those moving to a new city to spend their retirement years, often find less square footage more desirable than earlier in their lives.

If something goes wrong with a tiny property, it doesn't take as much money to fix it. Replacing a roof will be less expensive, and any wiring or plumbing problems should be easier to repair at an affordable rate. With the money you save on monthly mortgage payments, it may be possible to take advantage of community pools, clubhouses, tennis courts, and other social amenities.

Vacuuming and doing other rigorous cleaning chores can be challenging for older adults. Hiring someone to come in and do some of the housework may not be financially feasible. Tiny homes require less maintenance and make it easier for those with mobility problems to keep up their own residences.

People who make the decision to move into one of these tiny homes will probably have to get rid of a lot of possessions. They may decide to store items, have yard sales, or give important family mementos to loved ones. Most tiny home residents feel a sense of relief when they divest themselves of items they don't need, don't use, and that would be better off given to someone who really needs them.

When you move into a little home with other family members, it becomes more important than ever to learn how to get along and cooperate with one another. There will not be much room to avoid someone you are in conflict with. Communication becomes more valuable when you live in close quarters with other individuals.

You can have home ownership as a goal that does not include multiple stories, bedrooms, and bathrooms. This makes more sense to people who place importance on the quality of life rather than on the size of the home.
