Understand Gun Safety To Reduce Chicago IL Gun Violence

By Clayton Maske

In this day and age, in the wake of so much Chicago IL gun violence, it is imperative to understand the basics of gun safety. It doesn't matter how old you are, what nationality or religion you are, or what your political beliefs might be. Every person in this country should learn the basic rules of gun safety.

It should be obvious that you must never finger the trigger of your firearm until you're ready to pull it. This is a fundamental the National Rifle Association stresses. When you are in the process of aiming the weapon at a target, your finger should be on the side or on the guard. You must not even touch the trigger until you are prepared to shoot.

The person with the firearm should never, under any circumstances, point the weapon at another individual or in the direction of an unintended target. Accidents happen all the time, many with dire consequences. If you have a gun in your possession, it should be aimed at the ground.

Loaded guns should never be left unattended. If you are unsure about whether or not the weapon has bullets in its chamber, always presume it has. You should check this every time you pick up firearms. If you don't know how to check it, you probably don't need to be handling one.

Tragically, news reports about children who have gotten their hands on family firearms are becoming more and more common. Hundreds of deaths result from these preventable situations every year.

The Everytown group is a pro-Second Amendment organization, which teaches families with guns in their homes to train their children and other family members about smart gun ownership.
