Tdcs Therapy And Its Importance Today

By Della Monroe

The transcranial direct stimulation therapy is a process that has been used to treat patients with brain injuries like stroke. This therapy is quite simple and can be carried out at a health unit or even the home of a patient. It involves the stimulation of brain neurons with some electric current which is passed through the head from one point to another point in the opposite direction. Tdcs is a critical process and requires professionalism in its undertaking. It should therefore be carried out by an expert with the experience on how the therapy works.

Transcranial direct current stimulation has been advanced to help with other various problems affecting patients. These include helping increase the attention span of an individual, their understanding of a language, problem solving skills and even reduce memory loss cases. A professional therapist understands which part of brain neurons need to be stimulated at a time in order to achieve each different behavior.

Electric current can be passed through the brain in two different modes. Each mode brings about a different desired result. Current may be passed from the positively charged electrode which is the anode towards the negatively charged electrode which is the cathode. It can also be passed in the opposite direction which is from the cathode towards the anode.

The use of electric current in this whole process is to increase or reduce the excitement of different neurons in the brain. If the current is passed from the positively charged electrode, the result will be an increase in excitement of neurons in the brain. If passed from the cathode however, the resulting effect will be a reduction in the excitement of the neurons. In most cases, these modes bring about opposite effects of the same behavior.

The procedure requires you to have a power source that can deliver direct and constant current throughout the operation. Electrodes are also required for the process. Depending on the amount of effectiveness you want to achieve, the number of electrodes you need to have will vary. Modern forms of this therapy utilize more than two electrodes to achieve more effectiveness when placed on different parts of the head.

The process starts with cleaning and preparing the skin on the scalp where the electrodes will be placed. This ensures that there will be a strong connection created between the skin and the electrodes. The electrodes are then attached carefully and current passed through.

The powered source is switched on to generate direct current. This current is supposed to be passed on gradually. It can be increased or decreased gradually with time. A professional therapist understands the correct amount of current to be used.

Modern technology has enabled the advancement of this therapy. In modern times, more electrodes that are smaller and more effective are used. The use of many smaller electrodes enables therapists to be able to target specific sectors of the brain and therefore achieve more effectiveness in results
