Inspiring Social And Recreational Programs For Children With Special Needs In NYC

By Jordan Schmidt

There are some children who need extra attention because of certain disorders that they suffer from. One has to look at social and recreational programs for children with special needs in NYC because it is important that kids like this are always going further with their development and progressing to the next level.

Children develop a variety of these skills by participating in sports, such as horse riding, baseball and swimming as well as art and music therapy. Pet therapy is also something that has become popular with these kids. There are a lot of different inexpensive programs arranged in the summer months as well as other times in the New York NY area.

Usually you will find these in the summer months, but you may also find a program after school for one or two afternoons. You may also find something on a Saturday morning. It is a great way for kids to come into contact with others and improve their social skills. On top of this, they will also improve in a range of other areas, both on the emotional level and the behavioral side.

Riding horses, for example uses various muscle groups. The child will make a connection with the horse, so one learns about relationships. Swimming is also very popular. Here, different senses are involved getting into the water. There is often a facility for wheelchairs available.

Art therapy does a lot for the mental side as well as for the social skills. Children have to learn how to be more self aware and this will develop as one progresses and starts to work independently. There are different forms of art that the child can develop and one can also pick up on their gifts from time to time.

Music therapy has taken off in leaps and bounds as therapists use musical instruments, dance, singing and actually listening to music as a way of expressing oneself and also forming connections with those around them. Being exposed to your environment through this medium can really take you from strength to strength, learning about fine motor skills at the same time as well.

Learning these things outside of the home is useful because it is creative and one can learn to be completely involved in what one is doing. This can often turn into a hobby and a child may take this home with them, which would be a great thing if it can replace the television and other digital objects which are not as stimulating to the mind.

There are also camps that kids can participate in. These are held in the summer months and range from a few days to about two weeks. They will depend on how badly the child is disabled because some of these are adventure camps, which may suit the child suffering from attention deficit disorder. Not all children will be suited to this type of camp, but there are others and it is important for a child to get away and be independent once in a while. This will also teach them about independence.
