Reclaimed wood is different. The only resemblance that it would have with the normal solid wood would be the appearance the fact that they come from the same material. But when you say reclaimed, it means that it was already used for another purpose. It is said to be durable because it has experienced various elements that made it well seasoned and perfect when you want to achieve sustainability.

But you have to remember that there are only several stores which can be trusted with this material. Not all of them are as durable as the ones that are created with the standards of high quality. You should not forget that this will be used as a beam and it would not be effective if it is not made of the best quality.

If you want it to last, you have to make sure that it is well maintained. This is the same for every part of the home. Each material has its own means for maintenance. For a reclaimed material, there are specific things that you need to follow. It is still durable. But this does not mean that it would not eventually break when it is not taken cared of.

You can never determine when water can be splashed into the beams. They will be exposed to it at some point especially when they are located in areas of the house where you usually make use of water as well. It can affect the condition of the wood. But before that, it will still ruin the appearance that it has. You need to immediately wipe off the water with wet cloth. And then you have to follow it up with a dry one.

You might want to check if the designs will have the beams exposed to sunlight. There might be a conflict if you try to alter the designs and it might make the entire structure unstable. However, you still have to protect it from direct sunlight. You can make use of coverings such as curtains when the rays are already directed at the material.

It is also important that you keep it away fro appliances that will emit heat. And you have to be mindful of the fireplace as well if you have one. It will not fade the color of the material, but it will dehydrate it and it will be the reason why you will see cracks sooner or later.
