Use Fire Alarms For The Home To Keep Your Family Safe

By Mark Mahaffey

Home fires are things that we really do not think will happen to us. However, home fires are responsible for killing hundreds of people every year. Each of us is in danger of finding ourselves in a home fire, and that is why it is smart to educate yourself about the best ways to prevent a fire in your home.

The kitchen is one of the most high risk areas for a fire to break out, and this is because that is where the stove is located. If you have young children at home, make sure that you are always supervising them when they cook. The same is true for the very elderly. The risk is too great that they could mistakenly cause a fire.

If you have ever experienced a grease fire in your kitchen, you know how scary that can be. Do you know how to stop a grease fire? Instead of throwing water on it (which will just cause it to splatter and possibly burn you), cover the fire to starve it of oxygen.

They may seem innocent, but even dishwashers can be a source of fire in a kitchen. Both dishwashers and stoves work properly most of the time, but if they overheat and catch on fire while you are gone, you may lose your home. Never leave the house with either of these turned on.

In the even that a fire does break out in your home, the best way to protect yourself is to have fire alarms in your home. These will detect fires, often before you are even aware of danger.

And to get the most protection, sign a contract with a 24 hour monitoring service so they can watch over your system even when you are not home. If your alarm sounds, they can call the fire department for you!
